Glossary Term: ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE (APR)

Definition(s) for ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE (APR):


1. ) The cost of credit on a yearly basis expressed as a percentage.

2. ) calculated by using a standard formula, the APR shows the cost of a loan; expressed as a yearly interest rate, it includes the interest, points, mortgage insurance, and other fees associated with the loan.

3. ) The rate required by Truth in Lending laws. It is designed to show customers the total cost of credit, including the stated interest rate plus certain finance and service charges. See also Truth in Lending Act.

4. ) A measure of the cost of credit, expressed as a yearly rate. It includes interest as well as points, broker fees, and certain other credit charges that you are required to pay. Because all lenders follow the same rules when calculating the APR, it provides you with a good basis for comparing the cost of loans, including mortgages, over the term of the loan.
