Glossary Term: BOOK VALUE

Definition(s) for BOOK VALUE:

1. ) the book value of a company is the value of the common stock (total assets minus liabilities minus preferred stock minus intangible assets). The book value of an asset of a company is typically based on its original cost minus accumulated depreciation. Also called carrying value or depreciated cost, the net dollar value at which an asset is carried on a firm's balance sheet.

2. ) An accounting term. The book value of a stock is determined by adding up all of a company's assets and then deducting all of its debt and liabilities, including the liquidation price of any preferred issues. This sum is then divided by the number of common shares outstanding and the result is book value per common share.  The book value of a company's assets or of a security may have little relationship to the market value.

3. ) This represents the total amount of a company's assets minus liabilities and if issued, preferred stock.
