Glossary Term: CONVERSION

Definition(s) for CONVERSION:


1. ) refers to the act of changing chapters in bankruptcy (e.g., converting from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 or vice-versa).

2. ) a feature some funds offer that allows investors to automatically change from one class to another (typically with lower annual expenses) after a set period of time. The fund's prospectus or profile will state whether a class ever converts to another class.

3. ) An investment strategy in which a long put and a short call with the same strike price and expiration are combined with long stock to lock in a nearly riskless profit. For example, buying 100 shares of XYZ stock, writing 1 XYZ May 60 call, and buying 1 XYZ May 60 put at desirable prices. The process of executing these three-sided trades is sometimes called 'conversion arbitrage.' See also Reversal / reverse conversion
