Glossary Term: DEFINED BENEFIT PLAN

Definition(s) for DEFINED BENEFIT PLAN:

1. ) is a company retirement plan in which both the employee and the employer contribute to the plan. Usually the plan is based on the employee's salary and number of years worked. Fixed benefits are outlined when the employee retires. Upon retirement, you receive a fixed monthly check based on your age, salary and length of service. Unlike a 401(k) or other defined contribution plans, it does not necessarily require you to contribute any portion of your salary to receive a retirement benefit. The employer bears the investment risk and is committed to providing the benefits to the employee. Defined benefit plan managers can invest in private equity funds.
