Definition(s) for DERIVATIVE:


1. ) A financial product that derives its value from an underlying security or an asset that derives its value from another asset. In the tax-exempt market, there are primary and secondary derivative products. Call options, put options, convertible bonds, futures contracts, and convertible preferred stock are examples of derivatives. A derivative can be either a risky or low-risk investment, depending upon the type of derivative and how it is used.

2. ) A financial contract whose value is determined from publicly trade securities, interest, currency exchange rates, or market indexes

3. ) refers to a financial instrument that derives its value based on changes in an underlying asset, such as security or commodity prices, interest rates, currency rates or other financial indices. Examples of derivatives include futures, options and swaps.
