Glossary Term: PAR

Definition(s) for PAR:


1. ) Also known as par value, the term may mean any of the following: (1) The principal or maturity value of a non-amortizing, debt security. (2) The current face of a mortgage-backed security. (3) The price at which the face value of a debt security equals its selling price or 100. (4) For stocks, the face or nominal amount of a share.

2. ) The face value of a security. For example, abond selling at par is worth the same dollar amount it was issued for or atwhich it will be redeemed at maturity.

3. ) The Nominal Value of a security (always taken as £100 in fixed interest stocks). Some securities may have no par value (NPV).

4. ) A bond at par is one whose price is the same as its face value.
